today's and tomorrow's
excellence
In 2014, we decided to inaugurate the “Eccellenze d’Impresa” award together with Harvard Business Review Italia. The objective was and remains twofold: to enhance the Italian industrial heritage through the study of its many dimensions and specificities, and to inspire entrepreneurs with the best of global managerial culture, adapted to their needs, through publications, seminars, training, and consulting.
From this experience, we have recognized the distinctive characteristics that make Italian companies excellent. We have dubbed these companies "Champions of Italy" as they stand out for their vision and entrepreneurial courage, attentive and present leadership, and competent management. Furthermore, they are distinguished by high profitability, high return on investments, growth in shareholder value, and advanced and transparent governance.
In short, these are the enterprises that form the strongest structure of the Italian economy and have the capability to project themselves onto foreign markets with significant results, often achieving global leadership. Below are the five characteristics that define these companies.
The Entrepreneur at the Helm
Companies led by entrepreneurs significantly outperform those managed solely at the managerial level. This is because they are driven by an emotional and personal commitment that allows for complete integration into the corporate role, achieving results unimaginable in bureaucratic contexts. This management style can also be adopted by managers who approach their role with an entrepreneurial mindset.
Research and Development
The ability to increase equity value in the long term is closely tied to stable or growing cash flows, which depend on the uniqueness of the products. The Italian industry leverages its artisanal heritage and the unique skills of entrepreneurs to compete globally. Innovation and product development are the pillars on which these companies build their market success.
Internationalization
Italy is a country with limited, yet fundamental and unique resources, such as the know-how that enables companies to achieve global leadership. The internationalization of these companies occurs in successive phases: exporting, structured market penetration with dedicated products, and the construction of local facilities.
Competitive Strategy
Italian companies supported by Eccellenze d’Impresa stand out for their flexibility and capacity for innovation. As true pioneers of blue ocean strategies, our excellent entrepreneurs constantly reinvent their businesses, adapting to competitive challenges and finding growth opportunities even in difficult times.
Operational Excellence
Italian companies are recognized not only for the uniqueness of their products but also for their ability to become cost leaders when necessary. Unlike the United States or the Far East, which focus on low labor costs, in Italy, process engineering and automation play a crucial role. The experience of Italian enterprises in machine tool production is also supported and encouraged by the domestic market.
